The MacuScope aids in early detection of low macular
protective pigment, one of the major risk factors for
age-related macular degeneration.
Brilliant Eyecare is now able to provide proactive
detection of one of the main risk factors of Age-related
Macular Degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of legal
blindness in the world today.
With the help of the MacuScope, Brilliant Eyecare can
now identify those patients who are at high risk for
developing AMD.
AMD currently affects more than 30 million people
worldwide. According to the National Eye Institute, this
figure could soon approach epidemic proportions, easily
doubling in the next 20 to 30 years. It severely affects
a person’s central vision making it extremely difficult,
if not impossible, to read, drive or perform other
activities that require fine, detailed vision.
The MacuScope is the first instrument available today
that accurately tracks macular protective pigment
density changes in the macula, giving Brilliant Eyecare
the ability to place patients into either high-risk or
low-risk categories. Brilliant Eyecare recommends that
all adults be tested for AMD, especially those over 40
or with a family history of macular degeneration.
“Early detection of disease contributors to Age-related
Macular Degeneration is critical to preserving one’s
vision,” said Dr. Lloyd Snider, optometric director of
MacuChek. “Finding a potential precursor before symptoms
start is a major breakthrough in controlling AMD.”
Upon evaluation and detection of those at high risk,
Brilliant Eyecare developed a treatment program using
ocular supplements to manage the macular protective
pigment deficiency. Research has proven that treatment
with specific ocular supplements can increase macular
protective pigment density within six months.
“A medical device such as the MacuScope is a beneficial
addition to Brilliant Eyecare. We are pleased to be able
to offer this testing to our patients which could help
save their eyesight,” said Dr. Jo Anne Brilliant.
